Day 5: Munich, By Bus with a Stop at Another Palace

The hotel in Munich didn't offer free wireless and McDonalds didn't either. So as you have probably already guessed, I am a couple day behind in my posts.

I did find a Starbucks on Tuesday afternoon and was able to throw up the posts from Day 4 but I didn't have Day 5 ready to go so by the time you see this, we'll be on our way to Innsbruck!

Now, back to the recap.

We stayed in a very small hotel off a busy street in Munich. We were spoiled with 3 elevators, a quiet location and deluxe breakfast bar in Vienna and didn't get as lucky in this hotel. However, it was a couple of blocks away from some great shopping and Mariaplatz (the square with the Glockenspiel - see below).

On Day 5 we started the day with a bus tour of Munich and in the afternoon most of the group visited Dachau - formerly a concentration camp outside the city about 9 km.

A couple of Roman style buildings in Munich..

The city's oldest brewery...

The stadium from the 1972 Olympics

The summer palace of the former ruling family of Bavaria (the city-state where Munich is)...sorry I have no idea how to spell the name so I won't attempt to here.

Those are swans in the water below. In winter there is a man - swan ward - who tends to the swans which are kept in a building with an indoor pool.

The inside had some beautiful murals on the walls and gorgeous furnishings...

There was one room filled with portraits of beautiful young girls. The king commissioned these paintings all from the same artists...

The gardens were as beautiful as the interior...500 acres of land.

Sorry I'm still not getting many shots of people...I'll keep trying.

I'm not done with our Munich tour so stay tuned!

  1. Glad you were able to spend some time at Nymphenburg. The name of the royal family - Wittelsbach ... very simple! =)
